TfL’s climbdown on Battersea Bridge Road is welcome news

Battersea residents can breathe easy after TfL backdown on proposals for a bus contra flow on Battersea Bridge Road

Conservative Councillors for Battersea have welcomed the news that Transport for London (TfL) have decided not to press ahead with their proposed bus contra flow on Battersea Bridge Road.

TfL’s proposal would have seen buses running both ways in the southern section of Battersea Bridge Road (which is currently one way) and then turn right at the junction of Battersea Bridge Road and Latchmere Road.

Currently buses take a “long” route via Prince of Wales Drive/Albert Bridge Road. TfL claim that the contra flow would cut journey time by about 3 minutes. In addition to the contra flow, TfL were proposing a bus stand on Cambridge Road.

Local Conservative Councillors opposed the proposal for 6 key reasons (noise, safety, parking, width of the road, cost and location of the new bus stand) and worked closely with local residents and Conservative member of the Greater London Assembly, Richard Tracey, to ensure TfL didn’t go ahead with the plans.

Speaking just after the announcement St Mary's Park Councillor Hallmark said “this is fantastic news and local ward Councillors and local residents are delighted that TfL have taken notice of the strong concerns”.

Councillor Strickland added “local residents did a brilliant job here and their persistence must be warmly congratulated”.
