Potholes and Pavements
10 September 2009
Wandsworth suffered very badly from
last winter’s freezing conditions, added
to which leaking water mains weakened
the road base causing an unusually high
number of potholes.
In addition to the routine inspections
carried out by council officers your Balham
Ward councillors inspected every street in
the ward.
Since February, 5187 potholes of various
sizes have been identified in Wandsworth
and an extensive repair programme has
been launched. To date 342 potholes have
been repaired in Balham alone.
Potholes are not the only problem, though.
The bad weather also caused damage to
pavements in the ward, and the planned
replacement programme was extended to
include streets which had been particularly
badly affected.
Councillor Caroline Usher said, “When
surveyed, residents put a pleasant streetscene
near the top of reasons why they like
living in Wandsworth. I am delighted that
the council has responded so positively
to the damage caused by last winter’s
weather and that the road repair and
pavement replacement programme will
continue.”
